Disability Insurance – Insure Your Future
Disability is not a subject you think about, nor one you gladly talk about, but unfortunately a possibility if you work in a dangerous environment. As a mater of fact, it doesn't really matter where you work: chances that you become disabled before reaching retirement age are quite high. Accidents happen every day. If you think that a health insurance will do, you are wrong. You also need an income, not solely health coverage. That's why you should consider purchasing disability insurance.
Some people who have disability insurances do choose to fight their disabilities instead of staying home and collecting disability checks. So they do go back to work, one way or another. However, by choosing to return to work, or to start a new, easier job, they should stop cashing in disability checks or else support penalties for trying to commit insurance fraud.
If you want to purchase insurance for the event of disability, there are two types of coverage you may want to consider: short-term disability and long-term disability. Short-term disability pays for the early stage of the disability, usually from two weeks up to two years. Many employers include such insurance policies in the employee benefits package.
Long-term disability policies offer a better coverage, eventually till the disabled person reaches the retirement age. A long-term disability policy can be either renewable or non-cancelable. The renewable insurance is often cheaper than the non-concealable insurance, but the insurance premiums can be raised in special situations. Read the insurance policies carefully before purchasing. The non-cancelable insurance gives the insured person the guarantee that the insurer will not raise the premium, refuse to renew or cancel the policy, as long as the premiums are paid in time.
